The Surprising Health Benefits of Lemongrass Essential Oil

Often used in Asia to flavor culinary dishes and teas, lemongrass offers a number of health benefits. Chinese medicine used lemongrass to relieve physical discomfort and stimulate circulation, particularly when it came to joint and muscle issues. The oil also possesses natural digestive properties that help protect against the odd stomach upset.

The oil supports skin, particularly when it comes to purifying and toning. Additionally, lemongrass increases awareness and reduces negative feelings. The oil’s natural ability to repel insects, make it one powerful agent to have on hand when you’re venturing outdoors. Check out this homemade bug spray with Lemongrass

Need to get rid of some pesky fleas? Add a few drops of lemongrass essential oil to your dog’s shampoo.

Do you need a more positive outlook on life? Maybe you have just recently found yourself sporting a negative attitude. If so, place just a single drop of lemongrass essential oil into the palm of one of your hands. Rub your hands together firmly, and then inhale slowly for 30 seconds to 1 minute.

Varicose veins are unsightly, and you can’t be blamed for wanting to hide or cover up your legs if you suffer from this condition. Don’t worry, lemongrass can rescue you from this situation as well. Add 2 drops of cypress oil to 2 drops of lemongrass essential oil and combine with 1 tablespoon of a carrier oil. Apply directly to your varicose veins once or twice a day.

Do you have ligament or muscle discomfort? Lemongrass seems to be excellent in helping the body regenerate connective tissue, and helps regulate blood flow. It is also said to be great in supporting the body with head tension. See this study: Scientific basis for the therapeutic use of Cymbopogon citratus.

*Avoid contact with eyes, inner ears, and sensitive areas. There is a difference of opinion on whether or not Lemongrass has the same photosensitive reactions on the skin. To be safe, avoid sunlight or UV rays for at least 12 hours after applying. Always consult your healthcare professional if you are pregnant, nursing, or under a health practitioner’s care.

eteriske oljer for katt - essential oils cats - doTerra

Essential Oils you should never give your Cat

Are you considering using something natural like essential oils for your cat?

For us, Casper kitty is not just a pet, he is a valuable and loved member of our family. So, we are as concerned about his health as we are our own. Casper gets good food and plenty of exercise. But, as an outdoor cat, he has also had his share of bumps and scrapes. While we have a great vet and would not hesitate to use him when needed, we treat most of Casper’s health issues like we treat our own – with essential oils.

Although Essential Oils have been shown to be beneficial to humans and animals alike, a word of caution when using them on our feline friends – cats are extremely sensitive to EOs and can suffer harmful consequences if wrong oils or wrong dosages are given. Even inhaling a sensitive oil can pose problems.

The simple explanation is that cats lack a crucial liver enzyme that allow them to breakdown otherwise harmless compounds (hydrocarbons and terpenoids) that are found in many essential oils. These compounds are then stored in the liver and can cause liver damage. Sometimes it can take a long time for for these effects to manifest and by then it is often too late.

Here are the oils that can be harmful to kitty:

essential-oils-not-good-for-kitty

But it isn’t just a simple matter of staying away from certain essential oils, cats are also very sensitive to insecticides, herbicides, and other chemicals that find their way into the majority of EOs on the market. So, make sure whatever oils you use are 100% pure, therapeutic grade.

Once you have decided on a safe essential oil brand, you will find that there are as many opinions on what specific oils are safe and oil uses as there are oils. So the oils that I recommend are what I feel comfortable using on Casper.

Can This Body Wrap Make You Slim and Sassy?

Body wraps are all the rage right now, and according to many wrap enthusiasts, is a perfect way to tighten up that tummy for a special occasion. Apparently, the results don’t last forever, but still it’s not a bad deal when you need a quick fix. However, it is important to keep in mind that wraps should in no way replace good nutrition and exercise.

I haven’t tried any wrap method yet, but I am willing to give this one a go. There are different kinds of wraps out there, but the Slim and Sassy Body Wrap Detox Body Wrap uses certified pure essential oils and seems like a good one. The oils can penetrate the skin to support the body and aid in detox.

So, if you want to try the Slim and Sassy Body Wrap Detox Body Wrap with me*, read on.

What to get:

  • 40 drops Slim & Sassy essential oil blend (Metabolic essential oil blend?)**
  • 15 drops Eucalyptus essential oil
  • 15 drops Wintergreen essential oil
  • 10 drops Lavender essential oil
  • 10 drops Peppermint essential oil
  • 10 drops Grapefruit essential oil
  • 5 drops Cypress essential oil
  • 4 oz. of fractionated coconut oil
  • 4 oz. glass spray bottle
  • Over large cotton muslin or t-shirt (pure cotton, best washed in organic detergent. You might need 2 t-shirts if doing multiple areas)
  • Plastic wrap

What to do:

  • Add the essential oils and fractionated coconut oil to the spray bottle and set aside
  • Take measurements of your target areas (tummy, butt, thighs, upper arms)
  • Prepare the muslin or Cut the t-shirt across the chest, right under the arms and along the side, then cut into strips large enough to wrap around your target areas
  • Spray the Slim & Sassy Wrap Detox Body Wrap Solution directly onto your target areas
  • Wrap first with the cotton strips and then wrap the plastic wrap tightly (but not uncomfortably) around the cotton strips 3-5 times
  • Leave the wrap on for at least 2 hours. I’ve heard of some people sleeping through the night with the wrap, but it may be messy and uncomfortable
  • Make sure that you drink more water than normal during and after the wrap session. Oils break up toxins in your body and water flushes your system. Extra detox bonus if you add a few drops of certified pure lemon essential oil in the water
  • Remove the wrap and take your measurements again

I’ve heard that you should limit your wraps to once a week, but that you can rub the solution on your target areas everyday.

Citrus oils dissolve plastics so make sure you use the muslin/t-shirt before the plastic wrap. You don’t want the petrochemicals from the plastic to enter your body.

I am looking forward to trying this on my tummy. I will give it a month, wrapping once a week and rubbing the solution on everyday. Wish me luck!

Oh, and if you are going to try this yourself, let me know what you did and how it worked. Happy wrapping!

*If you have health concerns be sure to consult your health practitioner. This wrap is not for breastfeeding mothers as peppermint can lower milk supply.

**It is important to use 100% pure essential oils! I can only vouch for one oil company. Click here and look under 8 to see how important quality is and to find out what I recommend.

Boost Your Baby’s Immune System with Essential Oils

Lynn’s Essential Oil Story

What makes one essential oil different from another? It is their focus on quality and purity. I remember wanting to try essential oils a couple of years before being introduced to pure EOs, but temporarily abandoned the idea after the following experience:

In 2010, I walked into a popular health and vitamin store with the intention of buying some essential oils for reducing stress and pulled a lavender oil off the shelf. The front label read “100% pure lavender”. However, when I turned it around to read the back, the label stated a warning that this oil was harmful if ingested or used on the skin. I had thought to use it aromatically, but the idea of breathing into my lungs something that was harmful to my body did not appeal to me, so I put it back and left.

Fast forward to January 2013. I was visiting Utah when I was introduced to certified pure essential oils. I got a few samples and a quick rundown on how great the oils were and how they could be used. I was Intrigued, but had some natural skepticism.

While in Utah, I was staying with a friend. A couple of days or so after receiving my sample EOs, my friends daughter and son-in-law popped by the house with their baby boy. They had just been to the doctor about respiratory and sinus issues their newborn was experiencing. Poor thing was glassy eyed and completely stuffed! The doctor didn’t want to give the little guy any medication, but he did say to keep an eye on him and to bring him back if it got worse.

The mom was pretty frustrated with the situation. I told her that I learned that pure therapeutic peppermint oil can support respiratory health and showed her the protocol for babies in a great resource book I had. After researching oil safety and babies, we were ready to try it out.*

We diluted a little peppermint oil in some neutral carrier oil, rubbed it on the baby’s feet, and laid him down on a blanket in the living room. I know, many of you are thinking – why feet? Besides being less sensitive than other areas, the feet have larger pores that are able to absorb these volatile oils in a faster (and with peppermint oil and babies, safer) manner.

After about five minutes we went to check on the baby. Well, what we found when we entered the living room was a pleasant surprise to all of us. Right there, in the middle of the floor, was a happily cooing baby, all bright-eyed and bushy tailed!

If you want to know more about essential oils, check out our FAQ page here.

*Be responsible. Make sure to use 100% pure, therapeutic grade essential oils. Read the labels, do your research, and read about oil safety before using essential oils. If you are pregnant, nursing, on medications, or have health issues, talk to your doctor.

I Never Thought This Could Work

Jon’s Essential Oil Story

I have been very allergic to pollen my whole life. In fact, from April through July every year since I was four years old I had to choose. I either had to suffer through it or treat it with conventional methods that often left me lethargic and in a brain fog. Since I couldn’t stand suffering through it, I basically went around like a zombie for four months out of the year. But today, summer means fun in the sun and the great outdoors. You can even find me mowing the grass with sniffle-free enthusiasm! I owe it all to my sweet wife, and believe it or not, the power of plants.

A few years back, my wife Lynn was introduced to pure essential oils derived from plants. She absolutely loved them and tried to get me try them. Well, the thought of walking around smelling like lavender didn’t exactly appeal to my masculine side. Besides, if I hadn’t heard about the power of essential oils (and at 40-something, I thought I had heard it all), then it was likely not worth my attention. Plus, plants and I were not exactly on friendly terms, so I may not have had the best attitude.

Of course, what I didn’t know at the time was that essential oils are a plant’s natural immune system, the chemistry that protects the plants from disease. What does that have to do with people? People and plants have compatible chemistry and what helps them, can potentially help us. I am living proof! But back to my story…

They say that “pride goeth before a fall”. I certainly found that to be true on a trip to Utah in March of 2012 when I awoke feeling like a truck had hit me. I suddenly realized that spring came much earlier in the high deserts of Utah than in cooler northern climate of Norway where we were living. And I felt the full force of the pollen explosion the morning of a very important meeting.

I felt awful and looked even worse. I panicked as I thought – I can’t go to my meeting in this condition! Luckily, Lynn was with me. She convinced me to use her essential oils instead of taking of making a mad dash to Walgreen’s. I added two drops each of lavender, lemon, and peppermint to a shot glass of water, swished it around my mouth for 30 seconds and swallowed. Whew! It certainly had a kick and boy did I feel better fast!

This changed my world! Since that day, I have used essential oils during pollen season and it has made all the difference. No longer in a lethargic brain fog, I not only have the energy to play with my kids, I can play with them in the grass, something unthinkable a few years back.

There are millions of stories of how pure, therapeutic grade essential oils have made a difference in the health and wellbeing of others. If you want to know more, join our free webinar on Essential Oils.
